Bowing to the presence of conservative religion in our midst, Chets Creek has never celebrated "Halloween". Instead we enjoy the tradition of a Fall Literacy Festival that has literature at its core.
We encourage families of kinder kids to become involved in the celebration by sending home a cardboard pumpkin for the family to help the child decorate. The pumpkins are hung in the hall as a Fall decoration for all to see. This family- involved activity provides our little authors with a common real experience that they can write about in Writers' Workshop. Below are some of the many pumpkins.
Each class also chooses a favorite read aloud book and then uses parent volunteers to help the class make a presentation using pumpkins. This year's kindergarten entries are below.

I absolutely love your slides. The students, parents, and teachers in the building are so talented. They blow my socks off every year!

dayle,
Even though I am there every day and experience it with my kids, I love to see the pictures of all the great things we do at our school and the memories we build with our students!

Dayle,
You are an inspiration for each teacher and child. I am growing as a professional each time I access your blog. I believe the saying...You Can Indeed Teach An Old Dog New Tricks..is indeed true. Continue to "Knock The Socks" off of each learner you touch! Their work is amazing! You have been blessed with wondrous gifts and you continue to use your gifts in magical ways for professionals and children.-Susan Rewis
Oh...How did you import the slide shows? What program did you use?
