Barnhardt and Daniels board (above) features four delightful pattern books while Alvarado's board (below)fearures pattern books that were written in writing and Math patterns, so children could begin making connections of seeing patterns throughout their day. One of the pattern books on Haley Alvarado's board features Tanner's work with a Question and Answer Pattern Book . He chose the topic himself, "All About Kindergarten." These are his words:
Do you read books?
Yes, you read books at school..
Do you do ABC's?
Yes, you do the ABC's at school.
Do you count?
Yes, you count at school.
Do you read at school?
Yes, you read at school.
The Mall-ard's board (below) is another great example of patterns showing both pattterns in writing and patterns in math as children think about what Lucy Calkins calls "echoes across the day."
The book below from the Mall-ard's board is a typical kindergarten pattern book for this time of year.
Things I Found Outside
I found a pinecone. It was pointy.
I found an acorn. It was green and it was tiny.
I found a daisy. It was yellow and it was little.
I found a rock. It was big.
I found a leaf. It was brown.
I found a stick. It was big and it was gray.

These are great examples of what the children are reading and now they are writing the same kinds of books. They are writing their sight words easier and slowing down to get more sounds on their papers. We love to read what they come up with! MM
